Research

Professor Kim’s research goals are to investigate the fundamental processes in design and to provide methodologies and tools for design and design learning. Specific topics of current research include:

Product-Service Systems Design, Service Design, Smart Experience Design, Data-Driven Design, Human Activity-Centered Design, Design for Affordance

Design Thinking, Design Cognition and Informatics, Design Methods and Processes, Design Creativity, Design Learning and Education

Teaching

Professor Kim has been teaching Introductory Design courses emphasizing underlying cognitive processes in design thinking and design creativity and graduate courses in Service Design and Product-Service Systems Design courses with rich interdisciplinary viewpoints.

Academic and social Post

He has served the full term of 12 years in the Advisory Board of the Design Society (designsociety.org) and is a member of the steering committee of its Product-Service Systems Design special interest group. He is also on the committee of the ServDes (servdes.org) composed of 11 global academic leaders in Service Design.

Education Background

He received PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the Design Division of Stanford University with PhD minor in Computer Science, MS at Stanford University, and BS at Seoul National University.

Work Experience

He was a Professor at the University of Turku, Finland, and a Professor at Sungkyunkwan University, Korea. Also he was an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in USA.

Publications

Yong Se Kim has published, as of April 2024, 69 rigorously reviewed journal papers and 144 conference papers. He also has 25 patents registered. He authored books, including Introduction to Creative Design (2009), Business Innovation Service Design (2018), and Service Design Thinking for Digital Transformation (2020).
