同济大学附属皮肤病医院性病诊疗中心学科带头人，现任国际抗性传播感染联盟（IUSTI）执行委员，国际抗性传播感染联盟（IUSTI）亚太区主席，国际性传播疾病研究协会（ISSTDR）董事会成员，WHO抗性传播感染战略制定顾问，上海市性病治疗质量控制中心主任，上海市性传播疾病专业技术服务平台以及中央引导地方性传播疾病规范化诊疗技术示范平台主任。中华预防医学会皮肤病与性病预防与控制专业委员会副主任委员，中国性病艾滋病协会性健康促进委员会全国委员，中华医学会性病学组全国委员，中国医师学会性病学组全国委员，中国疾病预防控制中心性病中心专家组专家，国家级卫生应急专家，上海市性病艾滋病协会理事，中国男科杂志编委，中华皮肤科杂志通讯编委。周平玉教授长期从事性传播感染及感染免疫相关的临床及基础研究，特别在胎传梅毒、神经梅毒领域的研究成果在国际上具有较大影响力，其团队共发表论文100余篇，其中包括新英格兰等顶尖杂志，协作出版专著1部，科普2部，主持十三五重大传染病专项、国家自然科学基金、上海科委重点项目等十余项，研究成果多次获中华医学科技奖、上海市科学技术奖，对我国公共卫生安全与性病防控贡献突出，特别是神经梅毒相关临床及基础研究对优化我国梅毒防治策略产生深远影响，研究成果不仅指导国内性传播疾病诊疗指南修订，还被英国、美国等国际指南引用。比如：建立的神经梅毒早期诊断新策略被应用于全国50余家医院，使神经梅毒的早期诊断提前5至10年；首次证实头孢曲松可用于阻断胎传梅毒，结束了我国大环内酯类高耐药地区青霉素过敏孕妇无药可用的现状；发现唾液中含高载量梅毒螺旋体，改变现有梅毒传播方式认识、并建立早期快速梅毒诊断。周平玉教授深受国内外同行的尊重，被评为上海市领军人才（皮肤性病学领域首位）、享受“国务院特殊津贴”等。周平玉教授也获得社会的高度认可，被赋予全国卫生计生系统先进工作者、首届“国之名医·卓越建树”奖、上海市首届“仁心医者”提名奖、上海市“十佳医生”提名奖等荣誉。
主持十三五重大传染病专项、国家自然科学基金、上海科委重点项目等十余项。
